What is matatabi?
Surely you’re already familiar with materials like wood or cork, but you might not know what matatabi is or why it’s so beneficial for your cat. These are some of its properties:
Matatabi, also known as silver vine, is a climbing plant native to the mountainous regions of Japan, China, and Korea, and it’s one of cats’ favorite natural stimulants.
Why do cats “like” it?
- It contains compounds such as actinidine and dihydroactinidiolide, which stimulate the olfactory system of many cats.
- Common reactions include rolling, rubbing, sniffing, meowing, licking—behaviors similar to “euphoria” that last for a few minutes.
- Its effects are often stronger than catnip for many cats: around 70–80% of cats respond to matatabi compared to ~50–70% with catnip.
- There are also hypotheses suggesting that these compounds may originally serve as insect-repelling agents in the plant, and that their strong scent is what attracts cats.

- Stimulates play and activity, especially useful for low-energy or less active cats.
- Can help strengthen the human–cat bond when used during interactive play.
- In certain forms, matatabi sticks can promote dental cleaning as the cat chews or gnaws on them.
